"We Met in Bed" - the story of how I met the wallflower of my life, Dan

Wiccachicky and I both fell in love with the shyest men. Wallflowers as she put it. This is the story of how I met mine.

I was 18 and sure of myself. I was in school, I had good friends, I was dating my first *real* boyfriend when love hit me right between the eyes. My best friend at the time had a knack for meeting people on-line and I was always dragged along as the "safety net" in case they person turned out to be a weirdo. Lucky for us, no weird guys. Just really nice ones.

We were at a friend's place (Dirk, a guy she had met in a chat room and who we'd had coffee with on numerous occasions and decided he was a good guy - for the record he is a good guy. I miss him and his little girl Ariel) hanging around on a Friday night. I was there with the BF that both Dirk and Shannon didn't like. They thought he was weird. Dirk, was always, was online. He was trying to convince this other guy that he'd met to come by for a drink. He finally managed to convince him with an offering of free beer and good company. 40 minutes later the doorbell rang and after a short, drug (Mary Jane, no hard stuff for me thank you very much) and alcohol induced argument, it was decided that I should get the door because I was sitting right next to it. And so I opened the door and fell in love.

That night, after a few more drinks, we planned a weekend get away, essentially, a drinking fest at a cabin in the middle of bum-fuck-nowhere outside of Boston Bar. By that point, I'd already forgotten about the guy I was with and after a quick goodbye and a kick in the ass out the door, he was out of my life - all in the span of 3 hours. Yeah, I was young and a bit crazed and yes, everyone was right, he WAS a loser.

Two weeks later, 8 of us met at Dirk's house with 5 cars, one full of food and one with a trunk-full of $300 worth of alcohol. We headed up to the cabin and as soon as we arrived, the fun started. The keg and the booze found a new home in the bathtub full of ice (which meant to showering for the weekend - grossness). At about 3AM I claimed for my own the pull out bed right in front of the fireplace and at first light, I awoke to find a strange man beside me. I was under the sheets and he'd obviously passed out where ever because he looked like he was freezing. I sat up, started reading my book and pulled the blankets over the mystery man. I hadn't realized at first it was Dan but when I did, I felt suddenly happy. He woke up a few hours later and we exchanged a few words. He wasn't much of a talker and throughout the weekend, he spent large amounts of time drinking on a rock overlooking the river that ran right behind the cabin. I am seriously afraid of heights (like, I nearly fainting crossing a suspension bridge) but I went out there on more than one occasion to make small talk. On the last day, Dan, Paco and I stayed up until 5:30 in the morning drinking while the boys complained and asked me why they couldn't find a nice girl. I felt like turning to Dan and saying "HELLO! AND WHAT THE HELL AM I????"
When we got home, Dirk asked me what I thought of Dan. I was honest, I told him I really liked him and that he seemed a nice guy. Dirk swore to me that Dan hadn't asked about me. What a liar.

Two weeks after that crazy weekend, we were out at our local hang out. I had gone with Shannon and she was going to drop me off at home but she decided to head off and meet some people somewhere else. But before she left, she asked Dan to drive me home. And so, at 2AM on a Friday night, on a long, quiet ride home, he asked me if I'd like to have dinner and I, gushing of happiness inside, casually said sure.

Our first date started with ice cream on the beach at 11am on a Saturday morning, included a trip home to change and dinner. We talked and talked and talked. And 8 years later, we're still talking.

And when people ask us how we met, we always say "In bed". And of course, they always want to know the details. It's our little joke.

Testing!

Test test test! Is this going to work? It would make my life that much better if it did! :)

Let it snow let it snow let it snow!

It started yesterday. First comin in large, wet, unsticky flakes but by 12:30AM, there was 1/2" on the ground, it was slightly warmer than it has been for a few days, it was light out and the snow that was coming down was starting to really stick. This morning, we had nearly 4" but the city is snow free. I was up that late working on an expository essay on Gwendolyn Brooks' poem "the mother". I wanted to get a frist draft done so that I can edit before Thursday. I'm quite happy with the initial result. It just needs some tweeking. And that has been the extent of my excitement. But this morning, I was catching up on my reading and wiccachicky had a great meme that I had to steal. Feel free to run with it if you like!

This time by nailpolishblues. It's a familiar one but here goes:

1. Go into your archives.
2. Find your 23rd post.
3. Post the fifth sentence (or closest to it).
4. Post the text of the sentence in your blog along with these instructions.
5. Tag five other people to do the same thing

"Go to this website: http://www.multimap.com/ Put in your EXACT"

So you end up getting a portion of a MetaMapping How-to that I did way back when. Nice, I know.

So for part 2 of this thing, I tag:

Hell Week #3 Cazillion

So maybe it's not in quite that many but you get the picture, one of many bad weeks. Today, I'm exhausted, my eyes hurt and I tell you, over the week I've developed a bit of a quiver in my left eye. Every once in a while the bloody thing starts almost shaking (is that possible???? At least that's what it feels like....) and I have to stop reading for a bit. Other than that, it's just been the same old grind. Work, school, work, school and on and on and on...

I just want to go home and into my warm bed in my cozy pjs. And to make my day all that much better (dripping with sarcasm here), the boss lady is coming in this morning. Why today? She should have decided to leave me alone today.

On a good note, it stopped being foggy and now it's raining but a fair bit warmer. Who thought I'd ever be happy to see rain?

The Past Comes Back

It has been a crazy couple of days. Busy as heck with no end in sight. However, it is ALREADY Wednesday and I haven't given you a weekend update but, I did get tagged by the fantabulous misha. I'll update later but for now, here goes:

Ten years ago:
I'm pretty sure I was a geeky kid trying to be invisible in highschool so I could get by the day to day without being harrassed. Bastard bullies. We'll see who's laughing when we meet in a few years for the reunion!

Five years ago:
I was working at a good job with crappy people and thinking about going to school. I'm glad I got out of there.

One year ago:
I was working a temp job that sucked but with some really, really great people.

Five Yummy Things:
1. Flan Pudding.
2. Kale and beans. It's a Portuguese thing.
3. Chicken Masala (YUM)
4. Sushi
5. Anything my dad makes on the barbeque. Goddamn. <-- This is Misha's but I soooo agree. My dad is the BBQ King. He even has an apron to prove it!

Five songs I know by heart:
1. "Losing My Religion" - REM
2. "A Day Without Rain" - Enya
3. "Learning to Fly" - Pink Floyd
4. "Frozen" - Madonna
5. "Norther Touch" - Rascalz

Five things I would do with a lot of money:
1. Buy a penthouse somewhere in the downtown core with a uncompromised view of the waterfront and mountains.
2. Give my parents a wackload of $$. They deserve it.
3. Go to the "motherland".
4. Open a used bookstore with an inhouse coffee shop/performance space.
5. The charity thing fits in here somewhere. Dito.

Five things I would never wear:
1. Hotpants.
2. Bikini.
3. High heels. Not my thing.
4. Spandex. This stopped in grade
5. Mini skirts. Recently, I've even seen people wearing them in winter. It's freaggin 4 degrees outside. What the hell are you thinking?

Five Favourite TV shows:
1. Firefly (not on anymore but the DVDs are godsents).
2. Star Trek Voyager (thank you re-runs!)
3. Arrested Development (haven't seen it in a while...not sure if it's even still on. Bloody hilarious)
4. CSI: Miami (my guilty pleasure)
5. Six Feet Under (why do all the good ones end????)

Five things I enjoy doing:
1. Reading.
2. Drinking. Alone, with friends, at the pub, at someone's place, outside in the fresh air - it's all good. And no, I don't mean in a seedy alcoholic way either. <-- couldn't have said it better myself so I didn't. I stole this from misha too. 3. Listening to music. All the time. 4. Movies. If I could make a decent living, I'd watch movies for a living. Anyone out there need a screen tester? I'd be PERFECT. 5. Being in good company.

One Word Description

I'm too busy to do an actual post today so, I'm going to take this opportunity to share this great little thingy.

Please leave a one-word comment that you think best describes me.

It can only be one word. No more.

Then copy & paste this in your journal so that I may leave a word about you.

I stole from bourbonbird, and my word for her was extraordinary.

Strange Dreams

I'm feeling a bit unlike myself today. I had a dream last night that actually woke me up. I turned suddenly and opened my eyes. I looked at the clock and it was 3:30am. It wasn't a violent dream or anything, actually, is was kind of "romantic" if you'd like. It had something to do with a dystopian universe and a very, very handsome man (who looked a great deal like Christian Bale - I'm pretty sure it was him.... Sure I think he's a great actor and handsome too but a dream about him? It's a first for me, I can tell you that much!) But why I woke up with a strange feeling in my stomach, I don't know. It was a really weird dream and the other thing that surprises me is that I actually remember bits of it. I'm going to write it down here so that I can reflect on it. I think it has the makings of a rather good sci-fi story.

The air was dark and there were these things that looked like mounts or oil wells and they were spewing this black dust into the air. We were on a train coming down the hill and you could see all of these mounts all over a desolate, desert-like countryside and they were all blowing this black dust continually. The train had a number of cars. Some of them were the 1st class cars and the rest were open to the air. I think they were the open carts that they transport lumber in and they have the big plastic curtains that you can pull accross. Well, the curtains were open (to be honest, I'm not sure if they were even there...) there were a number of people on these open cars including me and CB (I'm going to call him that because I'm feeling a little weird that he was in my dream). Everyone is covered in this black powder but only a few seem to care. As a bunch of people are sitting around eating and drinking in the open air, a few others are doing so huddled in corners, with blankets pulled up to their noses and only letting them fall when they took a bite or drank. I was one of these people sort of hiding but I don't recall the reasoning for why I thought this black stuff was bad. The train keeps going along like that for a while and then it starts to get dark and people start getting ready to sleep. I sort of fall asleep on my side with this blanket wrapped all around me. When I'm almost asleep, I feel this other person get underneath the blanket (yeah, you can kind of see where this is going eh?). I remember this feeling of dread of not knowing who it was. There's a hand on my shoulder that pulls me about to face him/her and it's CB. I feel so much smaller and I have to tilt my head to see who it is but when I look up, the first and only thing I see are his eyes and eyelashes and what strikes me about them is the colour. Really vivid and bright. And then I woke up.

Weird eh? You guys are the first to ever hear about my dreams. I'm not one to remember them and occasionally, when I do, I don't put them anywhere. Until now.

Death by Caffeine (among other things)

This is hilarious (and a little scary). Try it for yourself! :)

It would take 449.01 cans of Pepsi-Cola to put you down

How many cans would it take to kill you? Find out.

And on a different note, here's another little quiz. This one I took from amyhcalum. I always considered myself a bit elvish but I guess I was wrong....I'm a cousin instead...

"Not bad for a Monday"

Long weekends tend to make me *more* tired but today, I'm acutally doing pretty well. Go figure. It was a good weekend....Lavern and I went to see "Shopgirl" on Friday. I must say I was rather impressed by how good it was. I am now more determined to find the novella somewhere. I will read it this year. Saturday, I came to work. Sanded down a piece of furniture (can't remember what it's called, looks like a sideboard but for an office...) and met Dan for a fun evening out. We watched "Jarhead" and boy, was I glad too. Great movie (even for people who don't typically watch war movies - me).

And yesterday, I did nothing. No reading, no homework, no cleaning, no talking on the phone. I just sat around in my PJ, slippers and a blanket watching tv. Random things that I watched: "The Breakfast Club" - I could only watch 20 minutes of this before I gave up. I've just seen it too many times to count. "Meet the Fockers" - I tried. It looked funny! But I couldn't do it. I watched 20 mins of this too. "Chasing Liberty" - this is a cute one. And yes, I cried at the end. How come real life romances aren't like that? "Buffalo Soldiers" - This is a great movie on what happens in a war where there isn't much figting. Manages to be disturbing and funny all at once."Sleepover" - a funny, straight to videoa (I'm assuming) cheezy flick about popular vs. unpopular girls going on a scavenger hunt with the winner getting "the" lunch spot. "Freaky Friday" - I always laugh when I see this one..."The Order" - I have a serious crush on Heath Ledger - but *shhhhhhhhhhhh* it's a secret so don't tell anyone. Hence why I would love to see a sequel to this. Sad but true. Finished the night off with "Blade: Trinity" - The first of these is the best but this one had some great lines (all of which belonged to Ryan Reynolds). I also rented "Cypher" which was awesome. Vincenzo Natali does it again. If you haven't seen it yet, I suggest that everyone rent "Cube". He directed on an impressive budget of like $250,000 (90% of which went to special effects...actors worked for almost free). It's amazing. It's turned into a bit of a joke with all of the spin offs (like the "Hellraiser" movies. The original directed by Barker = Awesomeness, the rest = not so great). "Cypher" is about 2 companies that hire people to "spy" on the other company. But to do that, one of the companies brainwashes people. Sounds complicated and to be honest, my explanation just blows but I highly recommend it. Awesome.

And since it looks like I'm on a movie kick, here's a list of a few other movies that I have seen adds for and which look mighty interesting. I'm thinking this is going to be a good "checklist"...:

Aeon Flux - looks really stylized and just like my cup of tea. Plus, I really enjoyed the cartoons.
Casanova - Heath. Again. Yum.
The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe - looks like good fun. I'm really excited to see how Narnia looks.
Memoirs of a Geisha - I loved this book. Hopefully the movie will be just as good.
Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire - Next weekend!
King Kong - WOW. This actually looks pretty good....
Brokeback Mountain - Heath and Jake together. Oh God. Plus Ang always makes a good movie.
Syriana - So Clooney put on a bunch of weight for this. It does look like a great story...
Just Friends - Reynolds and the fat suit. Plus this guy is freakin' hilarious;
A Skanner Darkly - they've been making this for along time. Based on a story by Philip K. Dick and directed by one of my favs. Linklater (he directed "Before Sunrise" and "Before Sunset" among other notables) plus Keanu is back into Sci-Fi. Nice.

So I think I'm done for now. I've probably scared everyone with all the movie talk and bloody links coming out of the ying yang. Look at it this way: if you're really bored, I've given you lots of stuff to look at! :)

Rockin' 80's Quiz Results!

Ok. So I "borrowed" this from jennjr and just *finally* completed it. WOOHOO! Turns out I know more than I thought! :)

Of no importance

I'm posting simply for the sake of posting. I was working on jennjr's 80's music quiz but got caught up doing work and have yet to return to it. I may give it another go now. Seems to have slowed down slightly. Other than that, it has been rather uneventful.

Though I did have a bit of a heart pounding moment yesterday. I was writing my inclass essay yesterday and with 10 minutes to go (or so I thought) the professor called time. Yes, mid sentence he called time. Turns out I managed to hear him incorrectly and instead of 9:10 the exam ended at 9. It's a good thing I had been working on my ending on a scrap piece of paper so I stapled it to the back page and explained what had happened. I'm not sure if he's going to deduct any marks for me not allowing time for completing. Though technically I did finish, the last paragraph is litered with cross offs and crooked handwriting. Oh well, nothing I can do about it now except wait.

New Toy

OMFG. I almost forgot to tell you all about my FABULOUS new toy! No, it's not a sex toy so stop thinking about it.

Yes, it is what it appears to be, an mp3 player. A Creative Jukebox Zen Micro to be more exact. And yes, mine is that colour. I still have the parent version of this player. Still works great as a hard drive but the sounds has gone caput. So, after eyeing this little beauty for what seems like months, I finally went out and splurged on Friday and bought it. Needless to say I spent a large amount of time on Saturday morning transfering over music and setting the whole thing up. It's awesome. I'm not just saying that either. Honestly, in comparison to iPod, this is the winner hands down. It's cheaper, just as attractive, comes with all of the accessories including a carry case, PLUS it has the added functionality of FM radio transmitter built in along with recording from radio and a 12h battery life. Not to mention that it's substantially cheaper. But enough of that. The reality is that I *love* my new little toy. I had nothing better to do yesterday so I added some new music including Madonna's new single as well as Alanis' version of "Cry". Coolness.

Talking about music, can anyone suggest a good Johnny Cash record? For some reason, I've been on a bit of a kick and I want to get a CD or two of his but I can't decide. I figure I can't go wrong with a greatest hits but there's a bunch of them!

Chocolate and Coffee....YUM

So once again, I'm bored out of my mind. I spent a few hours this morning with the boss on the phone helping her update her home email. I then decided to make some changes to my blog. Though they're not huge, I added a blog search, a RSS feed (yeah BABY!) and I *finally* fixed the comments which were buggered up. They would show up on the main page but not on individual posts in the archives. That was a bit of a headache but it's finally resolved. WOOHOO!

Now, I'm thinking of what more to do and eating candy which Dan and I purchased at discount prices after the holiday. The words chocolate and sale in the same sentence are just too good to resist. I guess I'm going to do another browse through my reading list and then read more random blogs or somthing. I wish I had some work to do...at least it would help pass the time...

What a weekend!

To begin, thank you to everyone for their nice words on Friday after my boredom breakdown. I was really, really ready to go home and there was no end in sight. Much better today. Thanks everyone! :)

So I went to the movies with Vernie on Friday night and "Capote" really is good. It was excruciating to watch though because I was witing for Hoffman to crack at any minute and he never does. He is in character for the entire 2h. AMAZING.

Saturday we went to see the moon show at the IMAX in 3D. It was SOOO awesome, that next month we're going to see the "Polar Express" in 3D. Cool. Vernie and I decided to leave "Jarhead" for another week and instead, we're going to the movies over the long weekend. Still excited to see this one! Oh yeah, and we went to go and see "Serenity" again on Sunday. Wickedness.

Sunday night turned out to be a bit of a nightmare. Claudia had to work and none of my friends wanted to go to the show ("What??? You're going to a rap show? On a Sunday night????" Yeah. And it ROCKED!) The schedule was a little off and Atmosphere didn't hit the stage until just after 11PM. I didn't get home until almost 2AM but it was well worth it. Amazing show. Definately recommended. I didn't realize that they had such a funky sound too becuase most of the stuff that I have is rap but they do have some smooth jazz/funk sounds and it was amazing. One thing that I noticed is that they're rap for white people. Not that there's anything wrong with that but it surprised me a little that there were no people of colour in the audience....That was just a little observation.

Tired as heck today but being very productive. Email is *finally* working and the day is SUNNY and CRISP. Beautiful winter weather. WOOHOO!

*Bored*

Boredom is settling in. I can't believe I still have nearly 2 hours before the end of the day. I can't think of what else to do to kill time. I resorted to reading random blogs and oh god, some of them are very, very bad. I'm wondering if that's what people think when they chance on mine. Do they think its shite? Oh well. Thank you to the few faithful. You guys ROCK.

I don't know what else to say....it's been a rather dull day. I've been on the telephone with the phone company on and off during the day dealing with a mix up with domain names, accounts and phone numbers. It's never ending.

I won't bore you anymore. And an FYI for anyone who is interested: one of the previews that is being shown with "Jarhead" is the $32M overbudget Peter Jackson extravaganza "King Kong". I've only seen screen shots and it looks great so I can't wait to see a clip. Wooohoo!

Have a great weekend everyone! :)

It was a dark and stormy day....

That's what the weather is like here. The wind is blowing HARD. Yesterday, at about 6:45, I was waiting for class to start and the entire college went dark. Power was out for 5 minutes before the emergency generators kicked in. I did get back my inclass philosophy exam that I wrote while sick as a dog and unprepared as heck. I was just too out of it to be able to concentrate on the texts so I didn't really review the material. When I saw the questions, I sort of blanked and when I started writing a few things came to me but there were still some blanks, or so I thought. JB gave us back the exams at the end of last class and OMG. I must have REALLY understood the stuff on a subconscious level because he was thrilled that I used unique examples that I came up with myself and he said my writing was consice and to the point. I ended up with 17.3 out of 20. Which I think is a low A. I'm very, very happy. WOOHOO!

On the bad side, I went home with a pounding headache and this morning I woke up with it. I've taken some Tylenol and it seems to be going away. Thank god too, it was really starting to hurt. Not that it would matter, looks like it's going to be a very quiet day here today. I only wish it was Friday....

News Making Art

WOW.

Toulouse-Lautrec's "The Laundress" sold at a Christie's auction for an astounding $22.4 million US to an anonymous phone bidder. WOOOOOO....mysterious. This is a new record price for a Lautrec.

Seven & Seven

I've been TRIPPLE TAGGED! This sounds like a bad WWE match....

jennjr, AmyHCAlum and wiccachicky have all tagged me so here goes...

Instructions:

It’s a simple game, really. List seven songs you’re into at the moment. NOT your all-time favorite songs. Doesn’t matter what they are, what genre they’re from, if they have words, if they’re good, they just have to be seven songs you’re into right now this very minute!

Then, when you’re done, you tag seven people to list the seven songs they’re digging right now!

These are my seven:

1) "Somewhere only we know" by Keane - this song is sooooo amazing (actually, everything of these guys is amazing). Whenever I hear this song, I have to stop what I'm doing. I just can't concentrate when it's playing. My girlfriend Steph bought the album after hearing it played at a local record store and fell in love, passed it on to me and I fell in love. Awesomeness right there.

2) "Amarantine" by Enya - woohoo! New stuff from her in over five years! I'm so excited! New album on sale Nov. 22. She IS amazing.

3) "Jesus Walks" by Kanye West - haven't really listened to anything else from this guy but whenever I hear this song (or even THINK about it), it's stuck in my head for a while. YIKES!

4) "Only" by NIN - OK. So I've loved nearly everything Trent has ever worked on but this new single is fantabulous. I think it's a throw back to the good ol' PHM days. Rockin'!

5) "Boyfriend" by Ashlee Simpson - I AM NOT ASHAMED. I actually like her (or whoever sings for her - whatever. I still like the music so THERE!) and this song is kinda' quirky.

6) "Wake Up" by Hilary Duff - Dito above (though I'm pretty certain she sings...). I just have a thing for teen sensations (not all of them but Hilary for sure.) and it's not a sex thing either so get your freagin mind out of the gutter!

7) "Blue" by A Perfect Circle - I LOVE this song. It's just total awesomeness. This is tied for last place with "The Clincher" by Chevelle. I came by this band (Chevelle) when I heard the album being played at a record store. Believe it or not, this is one of the best ways to find 'new music'. Wickedness.

That's my list. It could be much, much longer but it's limited to seven...

I can't decide on who to tag so, I'm leaving it open. If you do a list, let me know and I'll be sure to check it out. I'd love to see what everyone else is listening to.

Time Travel News a HUGE Success!

Well, I was nervous as hell but I managed through it. Managed so well he gave me an A. Highest mark in the class. I also finally got my inclass essay #1 and did really well too: 92% with some excellent comments. I'm thrilled. I talked to the prof after class too and he's not as much as a dickwad as I originally thought he was. He's just "different". Honestly, he seems like a decent guy. I still don't like the class, but I'm feeling much, much better about the whole thing.

Thanks to everyone who commented on the party over the weekend. It was great fun and I got a call from Rav (she and Kuldip had the party) and she woulnd't stop talking! It was great to hear her soooo happy.

The weekend is starting to shape up to be a busy one too. Off to the movies with Vernie on Friday night. I think we're going to watch Capote which is looking like a really great flick. Then Saturday, Dan and I, the Fancouver and Firefly groups are off to see Magnificent Desolation at the CN Imax and then in the evening I'm meeting Vernie and Steph for a viewing of Jarhead. I'm not a huge fan of war movies but I have this thing for Jake Gyllenhaal.......(we'll just leave it at that). I was going to meet up with Steph and Vernie on Sunday for an art show but it looks like it's not going to happen. I remembered to check some tickets I bought for an upcoming show and the concert is Sunday night so I'll be spending the day at home napping and just relaxing. Clauds and I are off to see Atmosphere. Clauds gave me a mix CD some time ago and there was some stuff of their on it. Turned out to be really, really good and now I'm hooked.

Ok. I've blabed enough already. It's hump day. YEY!!! :)
