It's been raining for 4 days here. Not that it matters much, after all, it is Vancouver however, I wish it would snow just a little. Just for Christmas. I don't think it'll happen though. I doubt it very much indeed.
It's been a crazy couple of days but it's finally quiet enough for a quick post. The weekend was nice. Went to my cousin's for a nice Christmas dinner and Friday night we headed off to see "King Kong" which, BTW, was really good.
I'm off to do my Christmas shopping today. I had a bit of a scare with Dan's gift. It was the first bad experience I've had with eBay and go figure, it happens around Christmas. Thanks to a really cooperative seller, I got my refund today and have ordered him a different gift which, I will (hopefully!) pickup at the local computer store tomorrow or Thursday.
Off to clean up for the night before heading home to watch "Serenity" which came out on video today! YUPPPPY!!!!
Thank the gods it's Friday! I hope the day flies out the window so I can go home! It's been a crazy few days and it doesn't appear to be slowing down but to my advantage, I actually managed to get a good sleep last night. I thought I'd take this chance to say how much I *LOVED* Narnia last weekend. What an amazing movie. This is definately one I'll be adding to my limited collection. It's been more than a little crazy lately. Between finishing up classes and work, time has been more than a little short and sleep has been lacking, badly. I hope that it will slow down enough in the next day or two so that I can catch up on my reading and commenting. In the meantime, here's a little something to tide everyone over...
I saw something the other day that made me more than a little upset.
Standing in line at the local Safeway last week I noticed something behind the cashier that caught my eye. "Is that People [the magazine] really in Spanish?" "See for yourself", said the cashier handing it to me. I flipped through the pages and was excited to find that yes indeed, the entire magazine (including some ads) where in Spanish. I bought it for my mom guessing that she'd have a great time reading it.
On the bus ride home, I decided to flip through it and there, near the back of the magazine, I saw an ad that made me cringe. It was for the US Military, in Spanish, and it went something like this:
"How many times does a girl think about changing her name?" and then it had some girl writing her name on a piece of paper repeatedly and then changing her title all the way from Sargent (or something) to General.
So it sounds harmless enough right? Well, my beef is: why don't we see these ads in regular "People" magazine? Sure, I'm not blind to the reality that military the world over typically recruit from minority groups but I had never, first hand, seen anything so openly targeted at a minority group. It's shameful and I'm not sure if I'm angrier at the military for creating the ad or at People magazine for agreeing to run it. I've looked around for an electronic copy of it and can't find it but if it comes up, I'll make sure to post it.

It's been crazy for a week. Usually, it's a day or two of insanity and then back to relative normalcy but the last week has been nuts and it looks like it'll only get worse. The big guy has said that this is likely to continue until the end of the year. I guess everyone is trying to tie up loose ends before the end of the year.
Classes are almost over. I have an exam tonight, one next week and a final essay due next week and then I'm done for the semester. I can't wait to have evnings to myself for a few weeks. Back to the grind in January! Other than that, it's been pretty quiet. I'm trying to budget tuition, bills and Christmas and it doesn't look good. It's going to be a poor little christmas this year. It's a good thing I've already purchased Dan's and my parent's gifts. Just sis is left. I hate bills. I sometimes wish we lived in a Star Trek like world where our society had advanced beyond money. Life would be so much better. Unless you lived in Deep Space Nine. Then you'd be bargaining with the Ferengi!
Back to work for me.
So, as much as I wanted to go the movies, I ended up at my cousin's for dinner and a few games of Scrabble (I won the first one and lost the second). My track record remains steady. By the time the second game was over, we had hit 2:40 AM. No way I was getting home so I walked back to my aunt's place and spent the night there. We didn't get up on Saturday until 11 and by the time I met up with Dan, it was 3PM. He wasn't up for the movies so we rented a few and went home. We watched "The Final Cut" which has an interesting premise and perhaps the best DVD layout and presentation that I've ever seen. The menus are excellent and though the extras are not great, the presentation is outstanding but the movie left a lot to be desired. Still work seeing but not great. I also rented "Primer" because I need to see it again to understand it. And so, "Aeon Flux" is on the back burner until later in the week. Surprisingly, Dan has agreed to watch "Narnia" with me on Friday night so on the way home tonight I'm going to pick up the tickets. I'm excited, it looks quite good. I'm a bit concerned as to why some groups are promoting it as "a good Christian film". Not that it matters but I'm not sure where religion fits in with this...
I did watch something with Dave that made me scream at the television. I've always been aware of how biased Fox News is but we watched "Outfoxed" on Saturday morning and I threw a fit. Honestly, how can the station say it's "Fair and balanced"? Can the citizens not sue for misrepresentation? It bothered me even more that when I was reading some fo the comments on the IMDB, some people said it was a crummy documentary because anyone who would watch FNC regularly would be aware of the prblems with it. Hello? Did you miss the point buddy? There are people out there THAT USE THIS AS THEIR ONLY MEANS OF "NEWS"!!!!! Ok. I'm dropping it here because I'm going to give myself a coronary if I keep thinking about it.
Yesterday, it snowed and Dan convinced me to go out grocery shopping for ingredients for a stew tonight. We did go out in the snow and it was fun. When we came back, instead of doing homework, I layed on the couch like a vegetable and watched tv. Actually, the TV watched me because at some point, I fell asleep and had a nice nap in the middle of the day. We, actually I, prepared everything last night for our stew and this morning I just turned on the crock pot. I don't know how I ever lived without one. I love it. So tonight I have to finish my 800 word research essay. God, I can't believe what an easy assignment this is.
It's been a tough week. I'm not sure where it's gone but I'm very happy to see that it's after 2pm on Thursday afternoon. That means only a few more hours here and then off to school for a discussion that I'm really looking forward to. I can't wait until tomorrow night but I'm dreading the rest of the weekend. I have to finish my research paper for Tuesday, prepare notes for the Final exam on Tuesday and for the other exam on Wednesday. I'm excited about having the evenings free for a couple of weeks.
I've already registered for next semester. Three more classes including a philosophy of religion which is being taught by my current moral's prof. I like his style and when he recommended that I take the class, I looked at the course description and decided to give it a shot. It looks interesting. The other two are more English classes: Fiction and then Themes in Fiction. Looking forward to the reading selections!
I was trying to find someone to go out with tonight but so far, no luck. Dan has made plans to go out with K and I'm left alone. I want to see Aeon Flux but I'm not quite sure yet if I'll want to go by myself. I'll see how the rest of the day goes. Failing that, I'll swing by the rental place tonight and try to find something to keep me entertained!
