Well, I'm not sure what's going on but it's raining cool stuff. Yesterday I got an email from someone at iFilm who's also interested in providing 'content and contest' stuff for the site. This is soooo cool!
I've posted the contest information for Notes on a Scandal so check out the site for details if you're in the Vancouver area (and that's Vancouver, BC not Vancouver, Washington).
Other than that, it's been a pretty uneventful few day so far. I discovered that one of my loan payments was taken out twice yesterday which has put me in the black for two weeks unless, by some miracle, some money magically appears. To boot, I just realized I have a dentist appointment tomorrow and I'm not sure I can even afford to pay for it. Ugh. This is really frustrating. Back to the grind now.
I have been tagged in the 6 weird things" game by Wiccachiky. I am supposed to post six weird things about myself before tagging six others.
There seem to be only two rules:
1) You can be retagged
2) The only way not to be retagged is to add an additional rule.
3) themarina cannot be retagged. ;) (once was hard enough!)
Weird Thing #1: I have trouble sleeping in a room that's too warm. I'd rather fall asleep in a cold room with a blanket.
Weird Thing #2: I'm a really social person but sometimes, I like doing stuff (like watching movies) on my own. It's like I need a re-charge before going back to normal.
Weird Thing #3: As with Wiccachiky, I have a bit of an obsession with Keanu Reeves. It's not dangerous or illegal or anything, I just find him extremely attractive and he's very intelligent - very nice combination.
Weird Thing #4: I haven't completely grown out of my highschool 'goth' phase.
Weird Thing #5: I sometimes find myself checking out women. I don't want to sleep with them or anything but I do love the female form.
Weird Thing #6: I hate taking a bath. Showers are good but baths I really dislike. Not sure why, just do!
I tag: anyone who wants to play along. Not sure who hasn't been tagged!!!
Ok. So you guys deserve an explanation on the previous post. On Friday, I received an email from Fox Searchlight (the independent film branch of FOX) and they wanted to know if I was in one of three cities and if I was interested in participating in marketing (ie movie passes) for an upcoming release. I can't begin to tell you how amazing this is. It's not only a movie I'm excited to see but, more importantly, I've made it on a mailing list! Seriously one of the coolest things that has ever happened to me. So today, I'll be receiving a FedEx (OMG!) containing a bunch of promo stuff for the movie along with a bunch of passes to a free screening in early January and the movie, get ready for it, the new Cate Blanchett/Judy Dench movie Notes on a Scandal! So, if you're in the lower mainland, keep your eyes peeled at MAD About Movies because later this week we'll be giving away passes to the screening!
This is by far the most exciting thing that happened to me this weekend. Other than that, lots of rest and prepping for the holidays. I had coffee with the boss lady yesterday and she talked to me about signing me on as a full fledged employee in the new year. Now, don't get too excited. She mentioned the same thing to me last Christmas and I'm still here but through the agency. The only difference this time is that they finally have financing and this has much more potential this year that it did last year. To boot, I've decided to follow up with the progress in the new year to make sure she's called someone. I've told her that I'd love to stay but something needs to change because I can't keep working for the pennies the agency is paying me so now she knows that if she doesn't hire me, I'll start looking for work elsewhere. We'll see how things go. I'll keep you all posted.
That's all for now I guess. BTW, I sent out a few cards to a few folks out there in Blog land (you all know who you are!). Did they arrive yet?
OMG. OMG. OMG. OMG. OMG.
I think I'm on the map.
I just got an email from Fox Searchlight.
OMG. OMG. OMG. OMG. OMG.
WOOOOOOOHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
Wow. I'm not sure what we did to deserve this mess but it's been an insane couple of months - weather wise at least. Over night, starting at 6PM but really kicking into high gear sometime near 2AM we got hit by a major storm, one that local media was referring to as a "mini typhoon" and for good reason too. Sustained winds of 80km/h hit the lower mainland causing lights out for thousands - including transit. Poor D was heading downtown this morning to pick something up at the college and so I was riding with him. We made it half way there (to nearly Broadway for local readers) before D gave up. He left me at Nanaimo and headed back. Surprisingly, transit wasn't too bad but for good reason. Power was out on the line in New West and Surrey and trains were only running from Waterfront to 22nd (where I usually get on). Strangely enough, both D and I made it to work on-time. Damage at the house included a portion of the fence being down so I moved it off the road before we left. Other than that everything seemed to be OK. It still looks really windy out there but it's clear skies. Looks like some of the bridges are still closed but I can't be sure. This stupid radio station doesn't give a lot of traffic updates.
As for me, the weekend is shaping up to be a quiet one. Lots of movies to watch, readings to complete and food to eat. Dad's birthday is Sunday so we're having a little family dinner. It'll be really nice. Other than that, pretty uneventful.
And now for the goodies. This weeks KFF (sorry Steve, you may want to skip the rest of this):

This is from way back in the day (as you can tell). Check out the shoes. Those, for those of you who may not know) are Fluevogs people!! At one point, made right here in Vancouver but now designed here and made in Poland. Just a little tidbit of useless information. How do I know this? Because I had the same pair and you can't mistake those anywhere. I now have a pair of their new ones but they've changed the design slightly. If you're looking for a well made, funky shoe, you can check out Fluevog's online store.
The tides are a changin'! The movie group get together yesterday was very successful with a few new members coming out and, for the first time, the men outnumbered the women. Not a huge deal but definitely something that's not a common occurrence. To boot, they were a lively bunch and the discussion before the show was excellent. It's nice to meet new people who have so much to say. Occasionally we get a quiet group and it's a bit of work to get conversation happening but not last night and it was SOOOO nice. A great turn out indeed.
Tonight, I'm having the pleasure of meeting Steph's man. They've been dating for a few weeks and I have to tell you, she seems so much happier. It's not that women need a man to be happy, far from it, but she's been looking for a relationship for a while and she's starting to look for that special someone to settle down and have a family with and her ill luck was starting to rub her the wrong way so this relationship is welcomed. I'm excited to meet the man that's making her so happy!
That's about it for now I guess. Just a note to readers out there that my other site, MAD About Movies, is running a contest for a free copy of My Super Ex-Girlfriend starring the very beautiful Uma Thurman. Make sure to check out the contest link on the left hand side of the page!
Happy Hump Day Everyone!
It was insanely busy yesterday and it didn't stop when I got home. Instead, I ended up doing last minute prep for the Bookcrossing Christmas party. It was a great success and sure to turn into an annual event. It was very exciting.
Only 2 weeks left until the Christmas holidays. I'm very excited to be getting a week off. I can catch up on reading and a number of movies I have sitting on my DVD player. I've got to tell you... I had to stop playing with my Nintendo. I bought a new game, Final Fantasy III, and OMG. For two weeks after I bought it, it was all I did. Every spare moment was dedicated to the game. And then last week I realized I hadn't picked up a book in 2 weeks. I've taken the cartridge out and left the game at home. Have to get on with some reading! But wow. Talk about addicting!
Back to work now. I have a stack of drawings that need to be organized!
It's been a week full of more lows than highs but that's to be expected once in a while right? I'm just really, really glad it's Friday and the day is nearly done. A sincere thanks to everyone who game me input about sis. I talked to her this morning and she's doing better than even yesterday and she's made an appointment to speak to a counselor on Monday. If nothing else, it's a step in the right direction.
And for the good news of the day, here's this week's KFF.

Have a great weekend everyone!
My little sister is going through a hard time. She's feeling really overwhelmed which in turn makes her depressed that she can't handle everything. She's only taking two classes but she broke down yesterday - something she doesn't do often. I'm worried about her. I've offered to track down a counselor or someone for her to talk to. Just a question for those of you out there who've gone through college - is this common?
My mom, sister and I sat around until 2AM just talking about nothing. It was really nice but I didn't get to bed until 3 and this morning I paid for it. I'm feeling *really* tired. It was well worth it but wow, I'm feelin' it.
To finish on a bit of a positive note, I read Darren's blog regularly and today he posted a little something he calls "Enhancing the Christmas Shopping Experience". It's a great laugh. Check it out.
One of my girl friends sent me this meme this morning and since I did it for her, I figured it was easy enough to copy and paste. So here it is guys, the holiday meme.

It was freezing at home yesterday (pilot light went out sometime in the afternoon which meant no heat for most of the day) and then this morning, my dad decided to try to light it himself. Sounds innocent enough except that at 6:30 this morning, we heard a huge boom. D and I got up like lightning and ran down the hall to find that my dad had tried to light it himself, something went wrong and there was a bit of a pop which shook the walls and caused the mirror I had int he hallway to fall. Sadly, the frame broke but the mirror itself was intact which is a good sign. I managed to get back to sleep for an hour but D was up until the alarm went off again. Not necessarily the best way to start the morning.
So I managed to register for my classes yesterday. I'm all set to go for January - I just have to pay the tuition fees. Education should really be free. It's such a struggle trying to go to school while still managing to live. Ah well, at least when it's done it could mean a more productive career for me.
Hope everyone's having a good week! I'm off to open some mail!
I gotta tell you I'm not thrilled about the fact that it's only Monday. It was a CRAZY weekend and this morning I really, really, REALLY just wanted to stay in bed. Alas, I got up and came to work and I'm actually feeling a bit better now though I still wish it was later in the week. The last few days have been insane around the office with Christmas decorating on Friday, new computer on Thursday (YEY! SOOOOOOOOOOOO much better!) and a weekend chalk full of stuff. Hopefully tonight will be a little more relaxing and the rest of the week will quiet down a little.
Almost time to go for the day and I still have a stack of work to get through but just thought I'd pop in for a quick note.
