It's been a bit of a weird morning. There was a meeting in New West this morning which meant that instead of coming into the office, I met the boss lady over in my neighbourhood. I started the day a bit earlier than usual but I was able to sit through the meeting, which actually ran a bit long, and by the time we ended back downtown, it was after 12. Essentially, I've only been here for an hour and it's really thrown me for a bit of a loop. A good loop (less work time today) but it took me 20 minutes to get settled in. Now, I'm just mustering up the energy to get through the rest of the day. Hopefully it'll go quickly.

Nothing much else to report really. Should be a good and semi quiet weekend which is going to revolve mostly around my electronics purchase tomorrow (which I'm very, very excited about) and a couple of papers (including one on New Religions with a specific focus on New Age) and surprisingly, I'm really looking forward to sitting down and really looking at some of this stuff in more detail. Should be fun.

I hope everyone else has a great, restful weekend and despair not, a long weekend is just around the corner!

And no, I didn't forget. Here's a good way to start off your weekend...with this week's KFF. Enjoy.

Hot, Hot, Hot

Wow. I just found these pics. Enjoy.

Old Skool

We're kickin' it old skool style today! WOOHOO!

Seriously, it's been a good couple of days and yesterday I happen to hear someone talk about Vanilla Ice and I just had to post this today. Ah. The memories.

When I was in grade 6, I was in a dance group with some friends and we created an entire dance routine to this song. We even performed it on sports day in front of the entire school, parents, teachers and volunteers. We thought we were soooo cool. That was also the year that I discovered kissing, makeup, hoop earrings and hair spray. Oh the good old days.

The awards tea yesterday was VERY nice. The people that gave me the award were amazing and great and it was fun talking to them. They took a picture of me with the donors and I'll be sure to post it when I receive it. I'll relay the rest of the story then.

Hope everyone is having a great Thursday! The week is ALMOST over!

A Stinky Problem

I was standing in the overpowering smell of some woman's perfume coming up the elevator this morning and I had a thought about the woman who was kicked off the bus because of her overpowering perfume (and it didn't just happen once either!).

Generally, a story like this doesn't even make it on my radar but standing in a waifing cloud of stink this morning, I started to wonder that maybe there was a problem here - lack of knowledge. She's arguing that her civil rights were violated but after some thought I've come to the conclusion that she's taking this too far just because she's embarrassed. From my experience working in offices, and lets be honest here; we're all experts because I'm sure everyone has had this happen at some point, most people wear far too much perfume/cologne. Men are just as bad as women are when it comes to this fault - they spray it on so thick that it enters the room before they do and also lingers after they leave. I'm sorry, you might smell good but I don't want to be smelling your scent for the next few hours because you were over zealous in your spraying this morning. Use some common sense and keep it light and simple. You don't want to get kicked off the bus do you?

And if you have trouble figuring it out for yourself, The Fragrance Foundation has some tips on how to apply perfume properly. Let me backtrack and say that perhaps this is a common mistake because it's not something our parents ever taught us. My mom never showed me the right way to apply perfume but at the same time, I know what bothers me about other peoples' application and I looked for ways to avoid the same mistakes. I'd say that's common sense no?

I've given way too much thought and time to this perfume business this morning but before I move on, that picture there is of my perfume of choice, Magnetism from Escada.

Looks like the rest of the day should be fairly mindless. I'm leaving a little early today to go the awards ceremony. Look like my brain can relax until class tonight.

Happy hump day folks!

A Message to Assholes Everywhere

So the day is going much better today though I'm not sure why. I was up until 3AM putting final touches on my Philosophy assignment and I must say, I'm quite pleased with myself. I just re-read it and it's clean, concise and I think I managed to develop and critically discuss the material. We'll have to see if the prof agrees.

Now I'd like to share with you a little event that I alluded to yesterday that actually happened last week. I was over at the coffee shop across the street on Friday. It was really busy, as it usually is at lunch so I'm plugged in, listening to one of my many podcasts when a guy goes up to the counter and even with my headphones on, I could sort of make out what he was saying. Just to be sure, I unplugged one year to listen to his discourse. He was ordering his food and making small talk with the cashier as an ESL student who is just learning a new language might. Stumbling over words, funny accent, hand signals, awkward silences and stops. Before I launch into a tirade, let me preface by saying that I'm not easily offended but some things rub me the wrong way and this is one of them.

This was not only disrespectful, considering that there were a number of people in the coffee shop who are attending the language school which also happens to be across the street (apparent by the fact that they are all carrying their schoolbooks). I'm sorry, but this was completely unacceptable. Not only was he doing this in public but he was doing so in such a manner that it was far from discreet and even when a few people in the shop gave him mean looks (myself included), he just continued ahead completely oblivious. If that's not enough, to make matters worse, the bastard WORKS at the language school!

I wanted to say something and to be honest, I'm ashamed that I didn't confront him directly though I did make a comment to the cashier along the lines of "Wow, so that's how teachers made fun of me when I was learning the language" and I said that loudly enough so that he, the miserable excuse for a man who was standing around the corner waiting for his coffee, could hear me.

Bastard! As if learning a new language, especially English, isn't difficult enough, people have to listen to your demeaning comments? Sure, he didn't directly say anything to put down those learning the language but god damned if his 'little joke' didn't hurt. UGH! It's been 4 days and I'm still angry about it. It was disrespectful, mean and just plain wrong. And the fact that he teaches at the school only rubbed it in further.

To the asshole who works at the language school and to every other moron out there who takes pot shots at people who are stepping out of their comfort zone to learn something as important as a new language, here's a little something for you in a language that assholes will understand:

Crazy Week - and it's only Monday

This week isn't starting off too well. Tons to do at work, at home, at school, at life.

Not too much time to post today but I thought I'd share this cool link with everyone. Not sure how many folks out there are David Lynch fans but the man is being honored with an exhibition of his original works at the Cartier Foundation and it's come to my attention that the gallery has posted a great assortment of his works on their website. To access them, including a couple of cool videos, click here, select English (a new window opens), select What's On, then David Lynch: The Air is on Fire, then Views of the Exhibition.

Enjoy and I'll be back tomorrow with a story of how making fun of ESL students can really piss me off.

Not Soon Enough

When I'm feeling tired in the morning, I have a routine. When I'm on the Skytrain on the way to work, I put on my "Wake Up" play list. It includes: Republica "Ready to Go", NIN "Head Like a Hole" and the above Iron Maiden calssic "Run to the Hills" (oh, and sometimes some Andrew W.K. I'll have to post one of his tunes next week).

So I was all awake, walking to work in the pouring rain when, somehow, I managed to step incorrectly and I fell on my knees, nearly falling forward all together and cracking my forehead open. Thankfully, I'm wearing black pants so you can't see the damage but my knees HURT like a mother and I broke a strap on my backpack which I've temporarily fixed with a keyring ('cause I'm soooo smart!). It doesn't hurt so much now but it itches! I'd like to take a moment to send a shout out to the nice lady who actually stopped to ask me if I was OK and helped me get myself back together. No thanks to the rest of the mofo's who just looked over and did nothing.

Wicca, I know you're out there and I hope you get to see this before the beginning of the weekend. I know it made ME feel soooo much better - today's KFF:

Nice. Very nice.

Have a great weekend everyone!

YEEEEHAW!

We listened to a few selections from Sting's Songs from the Labyrinth in English class last night and all I could think of this morning was Sting.

Feeling a bit tired today. Was up fairly late getting some help on the redesign and when I'd logged off and was about ready for bed, I heard some strange noises coming from upstairs. It sounded as though someone had fallen and freaking out, I ran up the stairs to find both of my parents standing on their bed trying to reposition their window cover. It was actually kind of funny. This lead to mom and I sitting down and the next thing you know it's 12:15 and I've been up there for over an hour. Always nice to talk to mom but not so late. I had a difficult time getting out of bed this morning.

And I clicked through a bunch of stuff and found this CLASSIC on YouTube. And if you don't recognize it right off the bat, worry not, it will all be clear about 30 seconds in.

Priceless.

More Time Required

I heard an acoustic version of this song being payed by a busker this morning and it really made my day that much better so I stopped and left him some change; a small token for brightening up my morning.

Turns out one good way to get D to sleep through the night is a romp in the sack. Painkiller free and lots of fun. Go figure.

I stole this from my friend who's far far away, Samanthadelayed.

Totally inspiring. Love it.

Sunshine!

It's a beautiful day out there and I can't believe I'm stuck inside. Hopefully this wonderful spring weather will come back for the weekend!

I'm a bit worried about D. He hasn't been sleeping well and I think it's due to the stress at work. He's not much of a drug taker but he mentioned yesterday that if this was still going on next week, he would go to the doctor. This is a sign that he's not doing well. He only goes to doctors as a last resort. This worries me even more. I'm not sure what I can do to help him sleep. So I'll put it out there in blogland. Any suggestions on anything he can do to help him sleep? Any help is much appreciated.

And the triumphant return of the stupid things said. The calendar is really pretty lame but once in a while, a good one comes up and this is one of does days. Enjoy.

On boy, that's a relief!

Lazy Day

It's been pretty quiet around the office today. I'm sure this is just the calm before the storm. No complaints though, I've managed to clean up a few things that have been sitting around for weeks. The front office actually looks "clean" (at least for the time being).

Lots of reading to do and not enough time. I think it's going to be a late night tonight finishing up all of the Philosophy reading for tomorrow night. Managed to get half of it done but ran out of time on Sunday.

D and I went shopping for PC components on Saturday to re-build a computer for my parents. He set the whole thing up and installed Windows on Saturday night and then, at 2AM when he was running the Windows Update, the bloody thing called it quits. Busted hard drive. We looked around at all the PC stores and they're all closed on Sundays. We did manage to find a hard drive in a box in our closet and things got done but now we know: cross your fingers the computer doesn't die on you on a Sunday because you're going to have to wait until Monday to get parts.

Dawn posted this weird thing today. I tried it at flickr and wow. Talk about weird...

Step 1. go to any website (the more pictures, the better)

Step 2. delete everything in the address bar

Step 3. paste the following code in the address bar:

javascript:R=0; x1=.1; y1=.05; x2=.25; y2=.24; x3=1.6; y3=.24; x4=300; y4=200; x5=300; y5=200; DI=document.images; DIL=DI.length; function A(){for(i=0; i-DIL; i++){DIS=DI[ i ].style; DIS.position='absolute'; DIS.left=Math.sin(R*x1+i*x2+x3)*x4+x5; DIS.top=Math.cos(R*y1+i*y2+y3)*y4+y5}R++}setInterval('A()',5); void(0);

IMAX = GOOD

Wow. D and I headed out to see 300 in IMAX today and OMG. I wish all movies were in IMAX, especially ones chalk full of hunky men...

Good way to start the weekend

Yesterday's news was such a huge surprise. I had a really hard time falling asleep because of it. I did eventually manage to get a few hours but I'm a bit on the tired side today.

Lots to do this weekend including a bit of reading, writing and some work on the website, not to mention shopping for audio equipment (which I'm both thrilled and worried about).

I came across this week's KFF on some random website and I can't seem to find a bigger version of it anywhere. So, if you happen to stumble by this picture, please send me the link! Please? :)

Have a great weekend everyone!

I WON!!!

OMG. This is the COOLEST thing that has EVER happened to me! I won a scholarship!!!!

OMG. OMG. OMG. I feel like a two year old that just got the gift I've been pining for for EVER!

I came home today to find a letter from the Douglas College Financial Aid office. I have been awarded the Ken McGlinchey English Scholarship which will pay for all of next semester. I'm not sure how I was entered into it but I have a feeling my old English prof may have put my name forward. Either way, I can't begin to tell you how thrilling this all is. It's a really nice feeling.

Now I just have to keep at it and win another one!

Too nice to be inside

Sorry kids. No music today as the site is down. Does anyone out there actually ever listen to the music? Just curious.

Pounding headache today. I've been using my HeadOn (of "I hate your commercials but I LOVE your product" fame) but because it's a lack of sleep type of headache, it's not doing much good. No "America's Next Top Model" for me tonight. I'm going to bed.

I'll leave you with my guilty read. Offensive, irreverent and I just can't help myself. Does anyone have a guilty read that they'd like to share?

Girls will be girls

My girlfriends and I are trying to set up a get together for the weekend and we were having a hard time picking a movie. Until I made a recommendation and received an email with this subject line:

"Mark Wahlberg in all his glory.... Whohooooooooooooooooooooo"

Guess what we're going to see?

I've got to admit it's getting better

I went home early yesterday and had a nice nap until nearly 8 when hubby woke me up for dinner. I also managed to finish my paper though I must admit getting into it turned out to be a little harder than I had expected.

My tooth really hurts today. The last bit of work I had done is starting to bother me when I chew. I have a few more weeks before my appointment. Hopefully my tooth won't fall off between now and then (exaggeration of course).

Virtualy Real

Wow.

William Gibson may have thought it up but it's all becoming a little too real for comfort.

Gibson himself posted a link to PS3's newest pitch, a service called Home.

Never heard of it. Neither had I. Check it out:

A few things come to mind watching the preview clip. The first is that it looks sharper than Second Life. I'm sure it also has to be creating some pressure at X-Box Live HO where they've just been blown out of the water as far as gamer communication and interaction are concerned but perhaps the most glaring point is that Gibson's vision has been slowly developing as reality.

Gibson also provides a link to a great article over at DailyTech which discusses the VR thing in a bit more detail and is an interesting read.

I'm not sure I like this future. Let's just say I have some serious concerns.

Blame it on the rain

Oh, yes I do. My moronic, yet darn entertaining, trip to the Park Theater on Sunday morning in the pounding rain didn't do me well and by the time I got home last night, I was in full cold/flu mode. The nightmarish illness that had me on my back a few weeks ago appears to be back, in a much more manageable and low key way but none the less, I'm feeling awful today.

I'm heading home at lunch and leaving the 4 people that RSVP'd to the movie tonight on their own. Hopefully a few will still go out and enjoy the film. In the meantime, I'm going to go home to get some more sleep and at some point before 10PM tonight, I have to complete the editing on my English paper so that I can send it off to the prof.

I should have known better than to head out in that weather but I really wanted to see the film. Thankfully it was good. Not enough to warrant illness but that's life.

I love it when a plan comes together...

It's very late or very early, depending on how you look at it.

I had an extremely gratifying meeting with Dale regarding the movie site re-design. I've been up looking at website and 'stealing' (the highest form of compliment they say) ideas.

I'm REALLY excited to get started on the nitty-gritty foundation plan. Still needs a little work but almost there!

Now the tricky part: realizing the vision.

JUST-A-FEW-MORE-HOURS...

It's one of those days. I'm swamped with more stuff coming at me than I can deal with. The day is almost over and I'm really behind and I can't stay late tonight. This should be interesting.

A full weekend ahead including trips to the theater for 300 and The Namesake both of which I'm really excited about. A good buddy who works upstairs brought down a copy of this weekend's National Post Arts & Life section and I snapped a picture of this great cover:

And to finish off with today's stupid thing:

Windows. I HATE Windows. But what choice do I have?

I managed to get a couple of extra days to recover (read-REDO) my English paper. Thank you to a very kind professor. D and I have been trying to recover the PC since Sunday. I had decided that I wanted to install Linux on my traveling companion but the initial install of Mandriva proved to be a bit of a nightmare. Then on Tuesday, I thought I'd give Fedora a shot but, for whatever reason the bloody installation stalls on disk 1. I'm thinking perhaps the ISO I downloaded was corrupt but I couldn't wait anymore so last night I broke down and performed a Windows clean install. Everything seems to be back to normal but I'm still a bit ticked off that Linux systems are so difficult to either 1) install or 2) find. Sure, I can find them online no problem but it took 3 days to download 2 different OS's and neither of them worked for me. I haven't given up all hope yet, I would like to leave Windows behind but it hasn't been easy for me.

In other news, I'm tired, my eyes hurt, I need sleep and I have class tonight. I hope the second wind is coming. Soon.

And I'm VERY thrilled to bring you today's installment of stupid things said in video! Enjoy!

How will I fill my Tuesday Nights Now?

With the wrap up of one of my favourite shows, Hell's Kitchen, and yes I realize I was watching reruns but I'd never seen it before, I now have an extra hour of TV watching time on Tuesday nights after school. Seriously, D and I were addicted. He'd come running to pick me up right after school on Tuesday's, we'd go home get changed and cuddle in front of the TV watching the chef raise holy hell. He comes across as a total prick but something about him is oddly appealing and I'm going to miss him. Thankfully, he won't be gone for long - the new season is slated to start June 25th. Woohooo!

If you've never seen the show and have NO CLUE what I'm talking about, you're seriously missing out. I found the video below of some of the highlights of season two (the season I just finished watching). I'm not sure about anywhere else but in Canada, the show aired on the Food Network in it's entirety, including all of the swearing but this version is bleeped so it's alright for watching at work.

Disaster

My laptop had a meltdown Sunday morning. I've lost all of the homework I had done that is due this week. To boot, the recovery didn't go so well. This means I have to re-do the homework not usually a big deal except for the fact that one was an essay and the other was a set of questions for philosophy class, not exactly the kind of thing you can do in your sleep.

I'm freaking.

Just a little.

And that was a party!

Just got home from a little party with mom and dad.

It was fairly good. Food was mediocre at best but the dancing was fun.

Here's a little clip I capture with my fancy new toy (my other camera died - suddenly - yesterday). This is a local folk group from an area of Portugal called Pico (actually an island).

Pressure is mounting!

The previous post was a test of the new (to me) Flickr option to "blog" a picture. Totally awesome.

The day is almost done and I'm still swamped with work. I have tons more to do before the end of the day and a whack of stuff to squeeze in this weekend plus I'm still trying to recuperate from the illness. Needless to say I'm starting to feel the pressure.

On a good note, I did manage to post our second podcast and this one is much more in line with our goal of 10 minutes or less to make for easy listening. So make sure you check it out here. And, of course, comments and criticisms are always welcome - and no, you're not going to hurt my feelings.

My sister ROCKS

Originally uploaded by themarina.
Alright. I'm feeling better today thanks to many drugs and some much needed rest. But the thing that really got me pumped today was this little gift from my little sister. I must have missed her when she came in either this morning or last night but she managed to get this on my table without waking us up.

It totally made my day.

Thanks sis!

Getting Better

For the first time in a few years, the flu has knocked me on my ass and I spent 10 hours in bed yesterday, sleeping on and off. At least it appears that the cause of the virus has been tracked back and though it makes me feel better, it isn't helping the illness go away any faster. I'm still achy and gross but at least I'm here today.

Will be back for regular programming tomorrow.
