It's been more than a little crazy lately. Between finishing up classes and work, time has been more than a little short and sleep has been lacking, badly. I hope that it will slow down enough in the next day or two so that I can catch up on my reading and commenting. In the meantime, here's a little something to tide everyone over...
I saw something the other day that made me more than a little upset.
Standing in line at the local Safeway last week I noticed something behind the cashier that caught my eye. "Is that People [the magazine] really in Spanish?" "See for yourself", said the cashier handing it to me. I flipped through the pages and was excited to find that yes indeed, the entire magazine (including some ads) where in Spanish. I bought it for my mom guessing that she'd have a great time reading it.
On the bus ride home, I decided to flip through it and there, near the back of the magazine, I saw an ad that made me cringe. It was for the US Military, in Spanish, and it went something like this:
"How many times does a girl think about changing her name?" and then it had some girl writing her name on a piece of paper repeatedly and then changing her title all the way from Sargent (or something) to General.
So it sounds harmless enough right? Well, my beef is: why don't we see these ads in regular "People" magazine? Sure, I'm not blind to the reality that military the world over typically recruit from minority groups but I had never, first hand, seen anything so openly targeted at a minority group. It's shameful and I'm not sure if I'm angrier at the military for creating the ad or at People magazine for agreeing to run it. I've looked around for an electronic copy of it and can't find it but if it comes up, I'll make sure to post it.
