I'm sure if I'd ever been inclined to look this up I would have noticed the connection but it's always more thrilling when you figure things out on your own.
So last night I was up pretty late trying to finish a scene analysis for my film class. I'd totally forgotten that this thing was even due but for some reason, at lunch yesterday it struck me. It's actually not a very difficult assignment but the fact that we had to include secondary sources sort of threw a wrench in the whole thing. That, along the fact that I had to choose a film that was listed in our text - not all that daunting considering that there are loads to choose from. I started with the idea that I'd cover the opening scene of Interview with a Vampire which brilliantly sets up the film but, I couldn't find any supporting sources. Then I thought I'd go with the unlikely choice of Clueless but, alas, I still couldn't find supporting evidence so I turned to George Lucas for help.
As is typical with dystopian future movies, THX 1138 has been dissected on a number of occasions so it was pretty easy to find SOME supporting material. I dug up my copy of the film and set off to find the perfect scene. Unlucky for me, there aren't that many scenes that have enough going on for analysis though as a whole the film does have a lot to say in a long, drawn out sort of way. I'll admit that it's my nice, roundabout way to say the movie is a little boring at times.
But I'm side tracking again. So I'm watching the movie, trying to pick a scene and I come across a good one where THX is watching "tv" and more precisely, he's watching a man being beaten by a police officer with a baton. The sound is clear and distinct and I had the feeling I'd heard it before and then, without even listening to the song, I knew it was the opening sounds to NIN's "Mr. Self Destruct". So this morning, I did listen to the song and indeed, I know I'm right but alas, I needed reassurance so I dug up this. Two things about that link: 1) it backs up my findings and 2) how freaking cool is it that NIN has it's own wiki!??!?!
So I can't find a video of the scene (though I'm going to track one down or create my own) but I find THE song and you can listen to it here:
Oh, just as a side note, the other scene I was considering is the re-birth scene in Interview when Louis is born as a vampire.
But that's enough jabbering for now. Off to do some work!
