Yesterday we discussed a few arguments from creation and then this morning, I read this entry which really made a lot of sense to me and I must say, I'm somewhat torn by this 'Dr.' Ross debate. On the one hand I can appreciate the fact that Ross did the work and obviously defended his case well yet on the other hand I can also see the truth in the argument that he lied his way through his thesis. Now, having yet to do mine, I can't really speak from experience but I would venture to assume that if you're putting that much of your life into something (your thesis), it's going to be something you fully believe in and have a vested interest in. The simple fact that Ross completed his thesis on something that he doesn't believe to be true seems wrong in some way. More than anything, it seems like a cop out. To me at least, it seems like he should have done his thesis on something he actually believes in like trying to find scientific proof for the belief that the world is 6,000 years old. I don't know, that's just me.

I've found all of this recent talk of creationism and Intelligent Design interesting. It seems to be a re-emerging theme in a number of my classes this semester and I must say, it's one of the few things that has really sparked my interest to the point that I've done some additional reading on the subject. This whole idea of how we got here and if we serve a purpose is one that really gets my wheels turning.

But enough of that. It's Wednesday and to celebrate hump day, and in lieu of a stupid thing today, I figured I'd share this with you. It's a video of one of my favorite performers. I've seen her live a few times and she's always fantastic. What I like best about this video is that they've captured her introduction to the song which is excellent for non-Portuguese speakers. It's a very quiet day today. The boss man is sick and the PM has gone off the site so it's just me and the accountant in the office. Actually, it's worked out quite well because I've managed to do some of the filing that I've been avoiding for months.

I'm running with a bit of a headache today. Not sure why but it started to set in about 10AM and though I tried to avoid taking drugs, I just broke down and took some Tylenol. Hopefully that'll kick in soon.

We had a great philosophical discussion about education yesterday. Not only was it eureka inducing but it solidified my belief that I'm always going to be swimming up stream. We discussed the difference between training and educating and how 'real' education requires questioning and critical thinking and those two things really play a big part in Literature studies and Philosophy. Not to say that critical thinking doesn't pop up in other places (I'm sure it does) but it's most apparent in these two areas. The funny thing is, the reason I've always leaned towards these areas of study are for precisely that reason: I love the discussion, the interpretation, the what ifs. I love taking the knowledge and using it to support an argument. That may have something to do with the fact that I love to talk so much.

All of this 'big thinking' led to another thought. This is also the reason why I love movies and why I run both a film and book group. I like the idea of reading or watching something and then discussing it. Finding little tidbits of information, hearing what others took from the same experience. And that thought led even further 'down the rabbit hole'. I started to think about why we make movies, why society cares so much for movies but ultimately, what we take from them. Is it simply for pleasure or are we looking for something more? Well, that sparked more thoughts (isn't it funny how all of this stuff happens at once? You have one thought and it sparks another etc.) and before you know it, I'd started writing some of them down. At the moment, all I have are some loose ideas and key words but over time, I hope to expand them a little into, hopefully, a series of articles on movies and their social effects (if there are any). Still a lot to think about and probably boring as heck for you guys (sorry) but I wanted to throw it out there and see if people had any more thoughts on this. If you do, let me know!

I'm going to skip the stupid things said bit today because the entry I have is sooooo lame. I may need to change this feature all together. Maybe best quotes or word of the day or something. We'll see. However, without further delay, here's this week's KFF. This one is a bit interesting. I found it on a website dedicated to photographs of famous people playing table tennis. Yeah.....there's some interesting people out there!

I feel like I've accomplished nothing over the last two weeks. Other than work, sleep and the film festival, I haven't talked to anyone, haven't gone out with friends and have, pretty much, turned into the girl I was before D ever came along. It was a nice break from "reality" but not something I want to fall into for good.

The film festival came to a close for me yesterday, although the last film isn't until later today. I saw some good films, a couple of not so great ones but it all finished on a high note. I finished off my festival experience with "The Fountain". I usually try not to watch movies that I know will have big releases but I couldn't wait for this one. That movie is like a religious experience. Seriously. Reading some of the reviews so far it appears that more than one person 'didn't get it' and, as usual, I'm not sure how that's possible. I remember in my first year "Intro to Philosophy" class the prof said that "Everything in the world tastes more or less like chicken". I got it. In my mind, this statement makes complete sense but more than half the class were stumped by this comment and even after a year of discussion, some still didn't get it. Not to say that I consider myself smarter or anything but my mind seems to decipher and process abstract ideas which is something I'm fortunate to have. Problem now is that I have 5 other reviews in front of this one which means lots of work this weekend. I'll keep you posted as the various reviews go up.

Things are back to normal now. I'm heading to BIFF tonight which will be nice since I haven't seen the 'crew' in a couple of weeks and I swear I'm going through some sort of withdrawal. Saturday I'm meeting the girls for brunch and a few movies and Sunday is reserved for little sis who's celebrating a big 25 this year. She loves Dairy Queen ice cream cakes and every year, we get a little one for her. This year, we're getting the big mother. It's a perfect excuse for eating ice cream.
