At least I think that's what some men are saying because you see, one of the big piece of news floating around earlier this week is a new study outlining that women's tears contain a chemical that has adverse effects on men: it turns them off.
Yup, it's true, apparently our tears are more advanced than men's. I overheard some discussion that this could be a step in the evolutionary ladder and that the tears are a way for women to combat aggression in men. It's definitely an interesting concept.

At LiveCity Yaletown last night, events got a little out of hand. Between the excitement of our first men's hockey win, the excitement of seeing a popular (very popular) local band and perhaps a little too much to drink, disaster struck when the crowd pushed forward when Alexisonfire took the stage. The crowd surged forward, crushing the folks up front into the barriers which eventually gave way causing injuries and stopping the show.
I caught wind of the incident this morning when hubby mentioned it (likely because he's a little worried about my plans to see a few bands in the coming days) but stuff like this is bound to happen though it does sadden me that it happened here. It's amazing what a few rowdy people are capable of.
Local blogger Tracy put me on to this video which was shot by someone in the crowd. I'm not a fan of the band but I will say this, they were a class act last night and I applaud them for their actions.

Oh dear god. The world is about to end. Not really but I may just need to start a new blog.
Looks like "New Moon" has a director. Chris Weitz has accepted the offer from Summit and all the details are here.
The real reason for the hubbub, there's something at the end of that article which says that Summit could have Weitz in Vancouver as early as Monday to start on the film.
Ummmmmmmmmmm, Vancouver just became the hottest travel destination in North America for 98% of women between the ages of 13 and 50.

In a recent interview (don't ask me which one, I can't honestly remember) Pattinson brought up the idea that "New Moon" and "Eclipse" should be shot back to back, considering that vampires aren't supposed to age and, as we well know, humans have a nasty tendency to get older.
Reading the news around the web, it seems that this may be an option that Summit is considering. Floating around is news that "Filming begins on New Moon in March, 2009, and will continue right through completion of Eclipse." The New Moon starting date was already well known but the second bit of news is fairly new. It's a good move on the studio's part but it doens't take away from the sting of the recent news that Hardwicke isn't coming back for the rest of the franchise.

For the first time since I joined this Web 2.0 (though I hear that's not the correct terminology anymore) revolution, news of an event broke on the social media sites before anywhere else. I'm sure it's not the first time it happened but it's the first time I've experienced it.
This morning, while sitting at my desk doing some work, I saw a number of LA based Twitter contacts enter the word "Earthquake". Before the radio managed to enlighten me and even before I could find information on any of the news websites, I was getting a regularly updated (like every 30 seconds) stream of updates from everyone talking about the earthquake. That's pretty impressive.

There's something big a-brewing in Canadian history that will make waves over the next few days but which seems to be low on the totem pole of recent news.
Tomorrow, Wednesday, June 11th, Prime Minister Stephen Harper will formally apologize to the thousands of abused victims of residential schools. It took years but a while back the government started compensating survivors for the abuse and trauma that they suffered in these residential schools which peppered much of the Canadian landscape in the 19th and 20th centuries. I'm not all that familiar with the systems but I have read a few accounts of what happened in these places and none of them were pretty.
I'm not going to pretend to know the details of what has transpired over the years but I do feel that it's extremely important that we, as Canadians, mark this day in Canadian history. If you're looking for more information on the residential school system, I suggest this wiki entry, the Aboriginal Canada Portal which has a fantastic collection of links to various resources and even this amazing video care of CBC's "A Lost Heritage" which shows a short clip that aired on CBC in the mid 50's.
For those individuals in the Burnaby and New Westminster area interested in seeing the apology, the Aboriginal Student Services has booked Lecture Theatre 1614 of the New West Campus to show the official stream of the Residential School Apology. The theater has been booked from 11:30 until 1:30 on Wednesday, June 11 with the hopes that there might be people wishing to view this historic moment. Any and all are welcome.
At the moment I can't find information on who will be live broadcasting the feed but if you have any information on where we can see this historic event unfold online, please leave me a comment and I will post an update.

Chances are that by now you've all heard about the news story of the crazy naked dude to who, yesterday, stole a pair of overalls and a semi truck and caused all sorts of havoc around Maple Ridge (outside of Vancouver).
I get the sense that the Lower Mainland isn't a hot spot for car chases, we only see a few a year televised, but this is the first time I've ever seen a chase with a semi. Thanks to the gloriousness of YouTube, you can check out a big chunk of the chase. I prefer the short and sweet version which shows the police taking down the crazy dude:

You know that New Kids on The Today Show bit I mentioned the other day? The YouTube gods spoke and the video is up. I'm a bit disappointed, mostly because I'd expected a longer segment and maybe a little singing but I'm not surprised that didn't happen, especially considering the endlessly screaming fans. You can barely hear anything over the screaming. What struck me most is that as the camera panned over the crowd, I noticed that only a handful of people looked old enough to remember the NKotB first hand. I feel a bit old after seeing that. Check out the video:
Poking around I also found this People.com clip which was kind of fun:
Looking forward to hearing some new material!
I'm not ashamed to admit that I'm a New Kids fan. True, I haven't made an effort to search out a best of album or anything (though the idea keeps creeping into my brain) but I am looking forward to new material from the earliest of the boy bands. A few months back I posted a link to the New Kids website and now, care of Just Jared, we have the first new picture of the gang together and I have to say, it brought a smile to my face. The crew will also be making an appearance on Friday morning on The Today Show in celebration of the 20th anniversary of their "Hangin’ Tough" album. I'll be YouTubing that at some point on Friday.
Does anyone else care about these guys or is this reunion a lost cause?

"Whoa, could Keanu Reeves' performance in the crime drama Street Kings convince skeptics the dude can act?"
That opening line comes care of a reporter over at Canoe and I must say, I think it's more than a little misguided. Has Kevin Williamson ever seen Reeves in anything else? I'll be the first to admit that he has his blank face moments but I'll argue, to my grave, that Reeves does have talent, when paired with the right material and director. How soon we forget My Own Private Idaho, Speed, Feeling Minnesota and YES, even The Devil's Advocate.
I would be surprised if Reeves ever managed an Oscar nod but that doesn't mean the guy can't act. Give me a break Williamson.
Yesterday, the BC Government introduced a new tax on fossil fuels which will raise taxes on gas by 2.4cents/litre. In return, every man, woman and child will get a $100 tax credit which, apparently offsets the cost. I'd like to see what sort of 'new funny math' (as my Gr. 10 Science teacher used to call it) they're using to figure that one out. Sure, it might be OK for folks that don't pay for natural gas and don't have a car but what portion of the population is that?
It all seems a bit fishy to me...I'm more inclined to believe the idea that this is all a way to offset ballooning Olympic costs.
God, now more than ever I'm leaning towards the NDP.
This is amazing.
Paul Mawhinney is a Pittsburgh man who owns the biggest record collection ever - it's made up of 3 million records, 300,000 CDs and a whole load of other recordings in other formats. And after years of buying and adding to the collection, he's now selling it. WOW.
The collection is currently up for sale on eBay but from Mawhinney's official website, it looks like he's looking for an institution that can maintain the collection in tact since it appears that it is one of the most complete musical collections ever. There is a hole load of history and WHY the collection is important, over at Mawhinney's website. I hope he finds the right person to take on his passion. This looks like the sort of thing Paul Allen should be picking up to add to his already extensive music collection - I could see this as an integral part of the the Experience Music Project.
And just for fun, here's a clip of Rob, the protagonist from High Fidelity talking about deleted Smiths singles. I hate this character. Both in the book and in the movie. He's such an asshole but this is the sort of obsessive thing that leads to 3,000,000+ record collections.
Yesterday I posted some pictures of the big explosion that took down a Starbucks.
Early news coming out from those "in control" was that it was a gas explosion, an accident but news today is that the incident actually started next door at Taco Del Mar and that it was arson. All the grim details here along with a rather uncommon picture - uncommon for Vancouver that is.

It sounds like a bad title but I don't hold any ill will towards Starbucks but I do hate the fact that the one that opened up down the street from my house closed my local family owned cafe (which, btw, provided free wireless whereas Starbucks wants me to pay).
There was a huge explosion on Broadway this morning which took down a Starbucks. I should be giving DB money because the only pictures I've seen of the explosion come as a result of his blog. Twice in one morning. NICE.

Picture originally uploaded by JakeInVan and he has two other shots of the "scene".
Oh MAN!
So yesterday I mentioned that it looked like the New Kids on the Block were getting ready for a reunion and now, thanks to Sean over at Media Bytes, we get a link to ACTUAL new material!
And YES, I signed up for the email updates. No, I'm not joking.
Check it out HERE.
Memory lane... "ohhhhhhhhhhhh, ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, Hangin' tough"
Looks like it!
I think I could actually drum up the enthusiasm to re-live my grade 5 love...
What's going on you wonder? The better question is what would happen if...?
The CBC is putting to the test what would happen if women weren't around to look after the home and what better way to see what would happen but by running an experiment? Talk about social studies on a grand scale. Sounds really interesting.
They've put together a show based on the experiment which I'll have to check into but in the meantime, you can read all about the experiment and what some of the participants had to say, here.

I'm not some crazed lunatic that thinks death, murder and violence are funny but I have to be honest, I feel very little pity for gang-related deaths and the same holds true for the recent death of Ricardo Francis Scarpino, a known gang associate who was shot outside of an upscale Vancouver restaurant. No, it's never nice when people die but when you're involved with as much crap as this guy was apparently involved with, your likely to have some pretty close calls and probably a bad ending.
My major concern about the entire thing is that this happened in public and luckily, no innocent bi-standards were killed and now I have some more news to report. A girlfriend passed on news that Keanu Reeves was IN the restaurant at the time of the shooting.
Thank goodness this thing didn't get too far out of control. And now I know the man likes a good steak!

Wow. This is so frakin' cool!
One of the groups I belong to, namely The 13th Colony which is a BSG fan group organized through Meetup.com has been discovered. By Wired.com! Check out the story on the home page - right at the top under Entertainment. It's titled "Battlestar Fans Get a Glimpse of 'Real' Caprica".
